When my students walk into class late, I make them sign in, just in case I forget who came in late when I take attendance. They are supposed to write down the reason for their tardiness. The reasons are usually pretty mundane, like "bathroom" but sometimes they get a little bit more detailed. Here are a few:
"???I don't know???"
"I am new and searching" (brand new student from Afghanistan)
"My brother has senioritis" (This kid's brother has been blamed on more than one occasion)
"My mom broke a mug and I had to wait for her"
"I walked slowly from my house"
"I thought school started at 7:30" (it starts at 7:20. This was the second week of school)
